Kumbh Mela

The Hindu festival of Kumbh Mela is held every 3 years to celebrate when Hindu pilgrims wash away their sins in a sacred or holy river. Kumbh Mela is held in 4 different locations across India, the largest of which takes place at Allahabad every 12 years and has been billed as the world’s largest pilgrimage.

The 2013 Kumbh Mela was also a Maha Kumbh Mela which happens only once every 144 years. This portfolio of pictures was taken on the main bathing day at the 2013 Kumbh Mela which was attended by an estimated 30 million people. This made the 2013 Kumbh Mela the largest gathering of humanity since the dawn of time.
